Suffice to say, if you have been with this series since its beginnings back in 2001, you get payoff. Literally everything in this franchise sees its culmination and payoff in Devil May Cry 5. Devil May Cry is an irreverent, tongue-in-cheek thrill-ride, packed to the brim with over the top cutscenes and cheese. It’s an absurdist, overtly anime story about vice and family. For longtime fans of the franchise, there’s a lot to love here. The game is overflowing with fanservice, subtle nods and musical cues. It goes so far as to tie in threads from a one season 2007 anime run. In terms of story, there really isn’t much to talk about that wouldn't otherwise be expected. Unlike Nero and Dante, V does not fight up close and personally with his enemies. Instead, he controls a trio of conjured familiars that beat up on the bad guys until V can swoop in with his cane for a finishing blow. Shadow is a panther that handles melee attacks, Griffon is a flying bird that deals in projectiles, while Nightmare is a goliath that is summoned by expending Devil Tigger Gauge to wreak havoc upon the battlefield. The style is definitely there, watching this tattooed teen-fantasy recite William Blake poetry or conduct an imaginary orchestra from afar while his goons beat up on all manner of demons is worth many a good chuckle. On the whole, though, the depth of Nero’s and Dante’s combat doesn’t feel as present in V’s it certainly isn’t as intuitive. It’s something new, but also something clumsier. At its best, the sections where the player takes control of V can be seen as a nice change of pace. At its worst, it drags down the game’s otherwise breakneck pacing. Even just last year, Capcom released a Special-er edition of Devil May Cry 3 for Nintendo Switch, which backported some of 4 and 5’s features to the original 2005 game. And so it was on the wind: re-releases are in Devil May Cry’s blood. And just a year and some change after the original release, Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition is here to occupy the limited storage space on shiny, new Xbox Series consoles and PlayStation 5s around the world.
The release was peculiar at the time, but retrospectively makes a lot more sense now that Devil May Cry 5 has released and returned to that original canon. It contained three new characters to play as, including a retooled Vergil as well as Dante’s companions, Trish and Lady. More inexplicably released in 2015, though, was Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition, released a staggering seven years after the original release.

First was the Definitive Edition of DmC, which brought gameplay rebalances, a performance upgrade to 60fps on console to match the series standard, as well as new features such as lock-on to resemble the original series more closely. At release, the project seemed like a one off, just an opportunity to retool the enormously successful third entry. The series continued to press on at a start-and-stop pace with Devil May Cry 4 in 2008 and attempted series reboot, DmC: Devil May Cry in 2013, with an HD remaster or two of the original trilogy tossed into the mix for good measure.Īll was quiet on the Devil May Cry front for a couple years or so, but quiet rumblings started to come to life in 2015. Among some bugfixes and a rebalancing of the game’s difficulty modes, it also boasted several new additions, including new difficulties altogether, new boss-fights, a reintroduction of the Bloody Palace gauntlet from the otherwise maligned Devil May Cry 2, and – most notable of all – a new playable character in series protagonist’s brother, Vergil. It all began with Devil May Cry 3, which unleashed its “Special Edition” upon the public just a hair over a year after the original release. The Devil May Cry series has a storied history of re-releases.
